Tom Brady says offense ‘looks really ugly,’ Matthew Stafford bests Vic Fangio, and more from Eagles-Rams broadcast

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford runs past Eagles linebacker Jalyx Hunt on Sunday.

The “boos” started on the first drive and serenaded the Eagles until they trudged off the field.

On Sunday, the Eagles fell, 24-20, to the Los Angeles Rams at home. After getting out to a 10-point lead before the break, the Eagles failed to score in the second half. Meanwhile, everything was clicking late for the Rams, who scored 14 straight points in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were plagued by injuries. Entering Sunday’s game, DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Lane Johnson (personal), Dallas Goedert (MCL), and Zack Baun (concussion) were sidelined. To make matters worse, they lost Saquon Barkley (hamstring), Quinyon Mitchell (knee), Jonathan Greenard (ankle), and Tank Bigsby during the game.

If you were tailgating at the Linc or just couldn’t tune in, here’s what you may have missed from Sunday’s broadcast on Fox:

Offense looks ‘really ugly’

Following the game, Fox color commentator Tom Brady did not mince words when asked about the Eagles’ attack.

“They’re struggling every which way I can remember,” Brady said. “The running game’s been average. The pass game, they just don’t know who they have in pass protection. They’re not adjusting routes. Simple throws and catches. … Some of it’s the players, some of it’s the plays, and just some of it’s general execution. But it looks really ugly up here from the booth.”

The Eagles were 0-12 on third-down on Sunday. Hurts completed just 12 of 27 passing attempts for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Stafford vs. Fangio

During the first quarter, a Street Fighter-style animation of Stafford and Vic Fangio was displayed on the broadcast. The 8-bit graphic showed the two facing off, noting that Fangio was 5-0 against Stafford in their last five matchups.

This time around, Stafford got the best of the Eagles defensive coordinator for the first time since Fangio landed in Philadelphia The Rams quarterback finished with 317 yards and two interceptions.

However, Brady offered some praise for Fangio:

“[Fangio] doesn’t ever feel like he has to overcommit to stopping the run because he kind of teaches these run players great block destruction, how to shed these blocks so they can maintain the integrity of the deep coverage,” Brady said. “Therefore, you don’t get as many explosive plays. And Vic is very patient. … He’s done such a great job of that as Eagles’ defensive coordinator.”

Brady’s microphone mishap

Brady has improved steadily in the booth since his first broadcast in 2024, but he is still prone to mistakes. Two weeks ago, while calling the Dallas Cowboys-Washington Commanders game, the seven-time Super Bowl champion accidentally cursed on air before calling a pass from Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott a “piss missile.” He later revealed both led to a “call from the FCC.”

On Sunday, instead of flubbing his words, he accidentally disconnected his microphone while breaking down a play. After the broadcast returned from the commercial, Brady admitted he was at fault.

“So you want to fess up to the mic issue?” Fox play-by-play commentator Kevin Burkhardt asked.

“My fault,” Brady said. “I have this big clunky board, which I have all this information about what I want to say all day, and I dropped it on the talkback button. And I’m sitting here going, ‘God, I can’t hear anyone.’ And it’s my fault the whole time. That’s like a quarterback owning up to his mistakes.”

Burkhardt, a broadcasting veteran, was not going to let his partner off the hook.

“You have this giant play wristband that you read plays and you’re dicing up defenses, but you hit the wrong button and we don’t hear that,” Burkhardt said. “Glad to have you back, partner.”

Back to class

Outside of the microphone mishap, Brady was sharp on Sunday.

His call on Eagles wideout Darius Cooper’s acrobatic 18-yard touchdown grab over Rams defensive back Quentin Lake received some love on social media. As Cooper came down with the touchdown — his first of two — Brady let out a scream similar to most Birds fans watching at home.

“Oh my God!” Brady added. “Lake went up, couldn’t grab it, and Cooper brings it in. What could be a pick ends up being six.”

Rain came down throughout the course of Sunday’s game. In the third quarter, Brady brought a football into the booth to show how to properly throw in wet conditions.
