John Kruk was great in the stands, especially when the new Sixers GM jinxed the Phillies

Mike Gansey’s tenure in Philadelphia isn’t off to a great start, but it has nothing to do with the 76ers.

The Sixers’ new president of basketball operations joined NBC Sports Philadelphia’s annual broadcast from the stands Tuesday night alongside coach Nick Nurse, with Phillies pitcher Jesús Luzardo cruising through four innings.

“No hitter’s still intact,” Gansey said, immediately drawing a groan from Phillies announcer John Kruk.

    “Oh boy,” Kruk moaned.

The very next pitch, Miami Marlins third baseman Javier Sanoja hit a single to left field, ending Luzardo’s no-hitter.

While Tom McCarthy quickly moved on to discussing what’s going on with the Sixers, Kruk sat silently annoyed, a knowing grin on his face as he quietly chewed his gum.

Later, in the bottom of the fifth inning, when McCarthy mentioned Luzardo had just given up his first two hits, Kruk hadn’t forgotten why.

“We know who gave that one up,” Kruk said dryly. “I was like, ‘Thank God none of us said it,’ because we could get crucified right now.”

Gansey appeared to take it all in stride, apologizing to Luzardo in a video shared on social media Wednesday afternoon.

“You pitched great, got a win, that’s all that matters,” Gansey said. “I got two tickets for you any time you want to come to a Sixers game.”

Kruk and Gansey share a West Virginia connection. Kruk grew up in Keyser, W.Va., while Gansey finished his college basketball career with the Mountaineers.

“I lived in Morgantown for two years,” Gansey said.

“And your liver’s still intact?” Kruk shot back.

Kruk and the rest of the NBC Sports Philadelphia crew — McCarthy, Ruben Amaro Jr., and Ben Davis — had prime seats right behind home plate at Citizens Bank Park Tuesday to watch the Phillies blowout the Miami Marlins 8-2.

It was the 11th time the broadcast waded out into the stands, an annual tradition (with a break for COVID) dating back to 2014. And no offense to everyone else, but Kruk is easily the star of the show, consistently tossing out a well-timed joke or unvarnished opinion just when the broadcast needs it.

“How do I say this politically … sometimes these umpires aren’t really great,” Kruk said when asked about the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System.

His best line of the night came when he told Nurse his poster was hanging in an office at Florida Gulf Coast University when they were recruiting Kruk’s daughter, Keira (who ended up attending Berry College in Georgia).

“My wife played volleyball there,” Nurse said, noting she was sitting elsewhere in the stands.

“I didn’t want to bring it up, because 50% of people get divorced,” Kruk joked.

There was also Kruk’s deadpan response to a pop-up that came down just to the left of the broadcast crew in the stands.

“Oh please hit me in the head,” Kruk said.

Sitting behind home plate was a first for NBC Sports Philadelphia, but announcers have previously called games for the network from above the bullpen, behind the Phillies’ on-deck circle, from Harry the K’s restaurant, behind the dugout, and from the outfield, where McCarthy actually snagged a home run hit by Atlanta Braves slugger Freddie Freeman.

The station also brought its studio show into the stadium, with Amy Fadool and Ricky Bottalico set up in Section 109 during Phillies Pregame Live. And it took the opportunity to ding Kruk when highlighting Citizen Bank Park’s best food and drink options.

The broadcast also featured a brief interview with Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet, which led to a side trip down memory lane.

“Do you remember, probably in the late ’80s, doing a signing in Aston, Pennsylvania at a bank?” Davis said. “I rode there on my bike … I went in and you had the long hair and a black and white photo. You signed it for me, and I still have it at my parent’s house.”

The night wouldn’t have been complete without the Phillie Phanatic tormenting Kruk. But the veteran broadcaster quickly put his hoodie on in the sixth inning when the mascot came tumbling by holding a giant bag of popcorn, which he dumped all over Amaro.

“Does anybody want any popcorn?” Amaro said.

“I see where you’re reaching to get it. Absolutely not,” Kruk responded.

Considering the lack of action by the Marlins, it’s no surprise the Phanatic and his antics with the Phillies announcers snuck into the Marlins’ TV broadcast.

The Phillies will go for the sweep Wednesday at 1:05 p.m., with McCarthy and Kruk in the booth. The pair will be back to call the first of a three-game series against the New York Mets Thursday night before handing the weekend games off to Fox on Saturday and NBC for Sunday Night Baseball.

The good news is NBC is bringing Kruk back to call Sunday’s game, pairing him up with former Mets reliever John Franco and play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti.

U.S. plays first World Cup match tonight. Here’s what you need to know for TV and streaming.

The United States men’s national soccer team kicks off their 2026 World Cup schedule Friday night against Paraguay (9 p.m., Fox 29) in a rebranded SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Here are our predictions for the game.

The U.S. got a lucky draw by landing in Group D, avoiding the European powerhouses and South American superpowers. And the U.S. has faced all three of their opponents — Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey — in matches over the past year.

Whether that’s a good thing or not remains to be seen. The U.S. defeated Paraguay 2-1 during a friendly meeting at Subaru Park in Chester back in November and enter the World Cup with a talented roster filled with Philly connections.

Fox is broadcasting the World Cup for the third time, but it could be the network’s last. TV rights in the U.S. for the 2030 World Cup in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain (plus three opening matches in South America) have yet to be sold, and Fox might not be able to afford keeping the tournament if the NFL is successful in squeezing the network for more money.

The network’s going all out, with a roster of studio talent that includes NBC’s Rebecca Lowe and CBS soccer analyst (and ex-French star) Thierry Henry. Fox also took a big swing by adding former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimović (better know as Zlatan) to its top World Cup studio team that will also include the polarizing Alexi Lalas.

“The other ones follow a script, and I’m there just to be myself,” Ibrahimović said on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night. “They want Zlatan. I’m going to bring them Zlatan.”

In a first, FIFA has introduced mandatory three-minute water breaks in the middle of soccer’s famous uninterrupted play, due to the heat. They will take place midway through each 45-minute half, and Fox took full advantage Thursday to cut away for a two-minute commercial break during Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa, cutting back after play resumed.

    Fox sure did!

  • Devan Kaney is back talking Philly sports on a new podcast with former Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth

Devan Kaney is back talking Philly sports on a new podcast with former Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth

Former Phillies All-Star Jayson Werth and former 94 WIP host Devan Kaney have started a podcast.

The first episode of Werth Talking About was released Thursday. The hosts discussed topics ranging from Werth’s passion for horse racing to their defining Philly sports moments — and whether the Phillies have what it takes to make it to the World Series this year. They promised to “tell it like it is” and “keep it real” in their weekly Thursday episodes.

Werth, who played for the Phillies for four seasons, helped lead the team to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2008 and 2009 before signing a whopping seven-year, $126 million contract with the Washington Nationals after the 2010 season. Though his departure was a major disappointment for many Phillies fans, Werth assured that he is impartial these days.

“I had some great years in Philadelphia,” he said. “I played on great teams, won a World Series, and nobody can take that away from me. … I can be a Phillie, I can be a Nat, but these days, I identify as a horse racing owner.”

For Kaney, Werth was a welcome surprise voice for the podcast.

“I was absolutely not expecting Jason Werth,” Kaney, who replaced Howard Eskin as WIP’s Eagles sideline host in 2024 before being laid off in March, told The Inquirer. “We’re one episode in, and he just has so much lore. He’ll just drop the most insane stories, and it’s awesome to work with him.”

Though out of the baseball limelight for the past few years, Werth is no stranger to podcasting, having served as a cohost of Off the Rail, a show discussing the world of horse racing with fellow former MLB player Shawn Kelley.

As the hosts got acquainted in the debut episode, stories bounced from Werth’s horses to his recent appearance in a Lakers jersey at Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and, of course, each of their perspectives on the Phillies’ 2008 World Series win.

Despite now being a horse racing enthusiast and accomplished owner — Werth’s horse, Dornoch, won the 2024 Belmont Stakes — he shared some analytical thoughts on his former team. Werth, who retired from baseball in 2018, offered a wealth of insider knowledge after playing in Washington with current Phillies stars Trea Turner and Bryce Harper. The latter sparked debate over his status as an elite player.

“I think Bryce is right in the middle of his prime,” Werth said. “If he can stay healthy over the next few years, we’re talking about a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

The Phillies have been one of the best teams in baseball since replacing manager Rob Thomson with interim Don Mattingly in April. Werth remains optimistic about the team’s chances the rest of the way but knows from experience that it won’t be easy — even if he believes the team is better than most.

“I would say this to the people out there that say, ‘Oh, this team’s not as good,’” Werth said. “This team, year over year, has made it to the playoffs, won the division, and found a way to get in. So this is a quality team if it keeps doing what it’s supposed to do. … Winning is hard. Everybody should know that. Winning is hard.”

As the Phillies move deeper into the season — and the baseball world descends on Philly next month — Kaney said the show will continue to evolve.

“We’re going to start incorporating a lot more guests and active players,” Kaney said. “I know we’re going to do a lot of fun stuff around the MLB All-Star Game here in Philly.”

Werth Talking About is produced by the ALLCITY Network and PHLY, which also produces Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship’s podcast, Exciting Mics. The show is working with the Major League Baseball Players Association to plan on-site episodes and in-person recordings as it grows.

“What we provide in our podcast is a unique perspective,” Kaney said. “It’s not attacking, it’s not hot takes, it’s not anything overly negative, but more so kind of peeling back the curtain on what happens behind the scenes.”

Kaney, a longtime Phillies fan, also hopes the show provides some optimism for fellow fans as the hosts draw connections between the current team and the ones Werth played on.

“If I was part of this Phillies team, I would be so sick of hearing about the magical 2008 Phillies just because they’re the last team that won,” Kaney said jokingly. “This is a good team, and we’re going to tie both of them together and find the similarities and differences between those teams.

“It’s going to be something that’s really fun for us.”

‘A breath of fresh air’: Jamie Apody’s role at Fox 29 expands following difficult 6abc departure

Ahead of anchoring her first Philly sportscast in more than two years (947 days for those counting), Jamie Apody’s focus was squarely on her feet.

“I’m mostly rusty with high heels. Oh god, it’s a disaster,” Apody said Monday night before making her debut as a sports anchor on Fox 29.

Apody, who spent 18 years as part of 6abc’s Action News team, is getting an expanded role at Fox 29. In addition to her regular appearances on The Phantastic Sports Show, which began in 2024, Apody will anchor the station’s Saturday 10 p.m. newscast and pop in elsewhere as needed.

“It’s not a full-time thing, but who knows? Maybe it’ll become that. That’d be awesome,” Apody said. “But I’m so thrilled to be doing what I love again.”

The expanded role will also include reporting, which will put her back into the stadiums during a busy year for Philly sports, featuring the World Cup, the MLB All-Star Game, and the Eagles heading to London.

“I’m more than ready,” Apody said. “I do think it’s going to be a little weird … not to mention starting with a different station’s name on the microphone after all this time.”

Jamie Apody has been working with Fox 29 since 2024.Fox 29

She certainly has plenty of experience. For the bulk of her tenure at 6abc, Apody anchored the 5:30 p.m. edition of Action News five days a week and was a regular at the city’s stadiums covering the teams.

All that ended when she lost her job in 2023, a gut-wrenching experience Apody wasn’t even able to talk about publicly until almost a year later. Her unexplained departure and lengthy absence was the talk of the town, and some viewers launched a Change.org petition asking 6abc to bring her back.

It was even difficult for Apody to return to Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field as a fan, something she avoided for about a year. Ultimately, she was forced back to the stands by her three young sons, all of whom are diehard Philly sports fans.

“It was really hard. Harder than I thought,” Apody said. “For a while there, those stadiums and ballparks really reminded me that I wasn’t able to do what I love more than anything, so it was hard for me to face. I actually made the choice not to face it.”

After leaving 6abc, Apody reached out to most of the stations around town and had meetings with both NBC10 and CBS3. But she really hit it off with Fox 29 executives Jim Driscoll and Dennis Bianchi, and said working for the station has been “a breath of fresh air,” recalling the words of former 6abc sports director Gary Papa, who hired her in 2006.

“He once told me, ‘You don’t know what you don’t know. You don’t even know what you know,’” Apody recalled. “The first time I walked in the door [at Fox 29] two years ago, I couldn’t believe what I’d been missing.”

She’s not the only Action News alum at the station. Former 6abc sports anchor Jeff Skversky, who also sparked speculation by his sudden TV exit in 2021, joined Fox 29 as a freelance reporter in 2025 after first contributing to The Phantastic Sports Show.

“I think it’s such an amazing fit,” Apody said of Fox 29. “I almost wonder what things would have been like if our paths crossed earlier.”
