The Eagles and Fanatics help Make-A-Wish dreams come true: ‘That [didn’t] even feel real’

After practice on Friday, Eagles offensive lineman Jordan Mailata had some wishes to grant.

After having a catch with the kids in attendance via the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he arranged them into a circle to play a quick game called claps, which he typically plays with other members of the offensive line. Mailata explained the rules: toss the ball to anyone in the circle, but you have to clap before you catch it.

Eventually, each player was eliminated until Mailata was the last one standing — that is until Jordan Davis entered the game, dethroning Mailata in front of everyone.

“He beat me at my own game,” Mailata said.

This was just one part of an already busy day for Dylan Hynum, 11; Sam Sweeten, 18; Evan Weiner, 16; Abdul-Sami Amedu, 19; Jemma Kearney, 15; and Dylan Parsons, 16.

Their schedule featured a $200 shopping spree at Mitchell & Ness, a tour of Lincoln Financial Field, and a meet-and-greet with Eagles players. They also got to sign a one-day contract with the team with Eagles general manager Howie Roseman in attendance.

    One-day contract

Dylan Hynum approached the podium where Roseman stood. There was a football card with Hynum’s photo and a one-day contract to join the team on the desk.

Hynum signed the contract and took his first few photos as an official player.

“See you out there on Sunday,” Roseman said. “Whatever you need for good luck, bring it.”

Dylan Parsons (left) signed a one-day contract with the Howie Roseman’s Eagles on Friday.Philadelphia Eagles

Hynum then returned to the conference room with the rest of his new teammates, marveling at the Dunkin’ goodie bags that greeted them when they first entered the room. The bags included bucket hats, glasses, socks, tumblers, koozies, and Boston cream doughnuts with their faces stamped across the top.

But the fun didn’t stop there. After signing their contracts, the kids made their way toward the front entrance of the Jefferson Health Training Complex, where they signed their very first autographs.

    Tour of Lincoln Financial Field

The festivities continued at Lincoln Financial Field, where the families were led through a tour around the stadium as the crew prepared for a home game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday (1 p.m., Fox29).

They were taken to several areas, including the news conference room where Amedu recreated Jalen Hurts’ famous line, “So that’s what y’all wanted to see, huh?”

Then they were brought into the locker room, where they were greeted by Swoop and they found custom Eagles jerseys with their names on the back hanging from their lockers.

The kids were taken onto the field in style with their new gear as they practiced their very own tunnel walk. Lights flashed, music played, and they made their way onto the field just as the Eagles would on game day.

    Meeting the players

“You’re my favorite player of all time, I swear to you,” Weiner said. “I’m not even joking.”

After posing for a photo with Jalen Hurts, Weiner kept his composure and used the time to praise the quarterback. But as soon as Hurts left, Weiner let out a big breath and put his hands on his knees.

“Oh my God, that [didn’t] even feel real,” Weiner said.

Once practice wrapped, the team made its way over to the kids, and players posed for photos, signed autographs, and engaged in fun conversations — including video game talk. Davis encouraged the kids to start playing Elden Ring, and Fred Johnson asked whether they knew what an Easy-Bake Oven was.

Parsons, a New Jersey native, only needed a few words to describe the day: “It was amazing.”

Parsons, who was most excited to see Barkley, wore a smile on his face for most of the day. He immediately put on his Dunkin’ sunglasses and tossed on his custom No. 26 jersey on top of his Barkley threads in the locker room.

“This is amazing,” Dylan’s mom, Kari Parsons, said. “It’s really awesome to see everything that everyone has put into them.”

Dylan’s dad, Joshua Parsons, added: “We never expected this at all, and then, out of the blue, we got contacted. And it’s just amazing to see the amount of effort they put into it and everything they do for the kids to make it special for them.”

    Attending Sunday’s game

The families also will attend Sunday’s game against the Rams. But first, Fanatics and Make-A-Wish surprised them with a $200 shopping spree at Mitchell & Ness to get them fitted up ahead of game day. Mitchell & Ness is owned by Fanatics, which has partnered with Make-A-Wish since October 2023.

Each kid will receive pregame field passes on Sunday and will have a special experience built around their wish.

Parsons will be a water boy. Weiner will shadow the team photographer. Amedu will get another tour of the stadium. Hynum will participate in the field flag experience. Sweeten, who is interested in being a sports broadcaster, will visit the Merrill Reese and Mike Quick radio booth, the broadcast booth with Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt, and the stadium control booth. Kearney will be on the field for pregame activities.

How a Philly father-daughter duo is working to build an inclusive community through their MMA gym

Black and red mats stretched out underneath dozens of students pivoting across the floor on the balls of their feet as they found the rhythm to strike the bag in front of them. On one side of the room, several flags hung on the wall, representing each nationality of students. Across from that, 33-year-old Christina Massie trained beside 69-year-old Don Spector.

Every Monday, students walk into Fight Club Philadelphia on Girard Avenue, take off their sneakers, and prepare to participate in the gym’s fight fitness classes — hitting a bag for 20 minutes, followed by weightlifting for another 20 minutes with a five-minute cooldown.

“We truly transcend sports,” said 57-year-old Michael Sulit. “I’ve had Croatian fighters train next to Russian fighters. As sick as the world is, there’s no barriers, no borders. We have 69-year-old men training with 24-year-old women. There’s no boundaries.”

Video: The father-daughter duo is steering away from a ‘traditional’ martial arts gym

The martial arts gym with a focus on striking has made it its mission to create a more inclusive community in combat sports and welcomes students of all levels. And father-daughter duo Michael and Shea Sulit are leading the charge.

“It’s such a tight-knit community, and that’s something me and my dad really take pride in because the gym is somewhere that can be intimidating for a lot of people, and that’s the last thing we want our space to feel like,” said Shea, 31. “Fighting is something that’s intimidating, and some gyms can really put a lot of pressure on you to fit into the mold. But we like to take the everyday person and give them somewhere where they feel strong and empowered.”

    ‘It’s a blessing’

Fighting has been in Michael’s blood since his childhood in the Philippines. Martial arts was part of students’ daily schedules at Central Philippine University, an American-based school.

“We didn’t have football or basketball or baseball,” Michael said. “We had martial arts. So, when I was a kid in school, gym for us wasn’t like dodgeball or duck, duck, goose. It’s martial arts. And if you’re good at it, your gym teacher calls your dad and goes, ‘Yeah, this kid’s going to need fight camp.’”

Michael went to a fight academy at age 7. Six months later, he was taking fights that adults would gamble on. At 10 years old, he moved to Philadelphia, where his love for combat sports grew with the rise of the UFC.

Michael was working in corporate sales for a food distributor for 20 years — but it wasn’t enough. That’s when he came up with the idea for Fight Club Philadelphia.

“It was a passion project,” Michael said. “It was crazy; it was full-on insanity. Everyone in my whole family said, ‘You’re freaking insane; you’re nuts.’”

The gym opened in March 2018 on Market Street. Nearly two years later, Shea joined the business, coaching a number of classes at the gym.

”Some days are good. Some days are bad,” Michael said. “But at the end of the day, it’s a blessing. She tells me when I’m wrong; she tells me when I’m out of line. And I’m blessed. I see her every day. Who can say that, you know?”

Michael Sulit (right) and his daughter, Shea, run Fight Club Philadelphia together.

‘Everybody should be able to protect themselves’

Michael followed the violence in the city closely as he raised two daughters, Shea and Arden, who attended Temple. A year before he opened his gym, a Temple student, Jenna Burleigh, was murdered after meeting a man at a bar.

Seeing something like this happen so close to home made Michael realize he wanted to find a way to help the community.

“Being a girl dad played a big part in this,” Michael said. “I think that everybody should be able to protect themselves and be empowered, especially women.”

Unlike most MMA gyms, Fight Club Philadelphia has a majority female members, and several compete regionally.

“Learning self-defense as a woman in general was extremely important for me, and then also living in an urban setting furthered that,” Shea said. “So it’s something I really wanted to take seriously, but then I just fell in love with it and turned it more into a passion.

“It’s an incredibly male-dominated field — most sports are. Men are supposed to be masculine, women are not. We’re not supposed to be seen in that light, and I really just wanted to change that. I wanted to give women the opportunity to step into that space and be ‘masculine’ if they want to.”

Fight Club Philadelphia has a majority female clientele.

    ‘It’s not a traditional gym’

Fight Club Philadelphia offers a range of classes for beginners and experts, including Thai Pads, Next Level Team, and its most popular class, Fight Fitness.

“People come here to get fit and learn how to fight and lift and get in shape,” Michael said. “It’s not a gym; it’s a family. It’s a third space, and you can really make some good relationships.”

Diana Mousetis, a 36-year-old Philadelphia native, has been a member of the gym since 2018. After watching a fight on TV at the bar, she decided to give it a shot and has never left.

“It’s a wonderful community here. It’s what keeps me coming back,” Mousetis said. “Knowing how to defend yourself is really important, especially as a woman. It’s definitely come in handy for me, unfortunately. … When you have nothing else on hand, you’ve got your two fists, and you’ve got feet, knees, and elbows, too. So learn how to use them.”

The orange carpet treatment, Charles Barkley’s hot take, and more from the Flyers’ fan fest

Orange and black Flyers jerseys decorated the lawn of Stateside Live! as fans attended the Flyers’ fan fest ahead of the team’s season opener. After the orange carpet, they stood in front of the large stage in the back of the venue, patiently watching the bottom of the 10th inning as the Phillies clung to a 4-3 lead in Game 2 of their National League wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves.

As soon as the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system confirmed the last pitch was a strike, fans threw their hands in the air and cheered as the Phillies sent the series to Game 3. Now, it was time to turn their attention to the Flyers and their lid-lifter against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“When I came in today, it was kind of quiet,” said Roxborough native Mark Posusney. “But the back-to-back home runs from [Kyle] Schwarber and [Bryce] Harper, it just got juiced. … I think it’s an 11 out of 10 with the atmosphere here with the Flyers starting.”

Here’s everything you missed from Flyers fan fest:

    The orange carpet rolls out

Just a few hours before puck drop, the orange carpet was rolled out for the player walk-ins. The Flyers players, dressed to the nines, were greeted by a line of fans before heading over to Xfinity Mobile Arena.

“Seeing them interact with the fans and seeing that they want to be here, it’s huge for us,” said New Jersey native Robby Seitziager. “Seeing that they actually care is the biggest thing for me.”

Owen Tippet, who has been featured in Annie O’Donnell’s rapid-fire NHL fit reviews on Instagram, showed up in a monochromatic look perfect for the fall.

‘Our players have to do their part’

Flyers president of hockey operations Keith Jones hopes the Flyers can continue to ride the success they found late last season — making their first playoff appearance since 2020 — especially with the attention surrounding the city following the arrival of LeBron James.

“It’s interesting to be able to see the type of talent that’s electing to come here in the other sports,” Jones said. “It has to make them feel like they’re part of something important in this city. And this city’s always been about every team.

“And we, as the Flyers, want to make sure that we’re a part of that story. So our players have to do their part. They have to perform well like they did last year and kind of build off that in order to continue that momentum.”

Sights and sounds from the Flyers' home opener fan fest
Video: Sights and sounds from the Flyers’ home opener fan fest

Jones has also noticed a shift in buzz surrounding the team.

“I think this city loves an underdog story,” Jones said. “And last year, we were that. With the low percentage chance to make the playoffs and our guys going on a run and doing an outstanding job, winning a playoff round, which hadn’t happened in a while, playing a home playoff game, that was a big deal. So, all of those things have really built a lot of momentum and it’s exciting for us. And now we have to go out and meet those expectations.”

    Fans have high hopes

That buzz was shown throughout the crowd at Stateside Live!. Port Richmond native John Powers said he had never bought a Flyers jersey or any type of ticket package until this season.

“There’s a lot of energy around the season,” Powers said. “I went to an open practice a couple weeks ago. Hopefully, we can do exactly what we did last year. Get into the playoffs and see what happens.”

And when fans were asked who they were most excited to see, they responded with a wide array of names from Matvei Michkov and Cam York to Travis Konecny. And as Porter Martone heads into his first full professional season, some are even eyeing the Calder Trophy for him as the NHL’s rookie of the year.

“The team is not too far off from last year,” said Philadelphia native Jim Scheuren. “So, I think similar expectations, maybe a few more points. I think the biggest thing this year is Martone coming in, he only played a few games last year and then the playoffs. So, I think him putting up a rookie-of-the-year season. And then Michkov dropping 20 pounds, I think that’s a huge thing.”

NHL on TNT comes to Philly

NHL on TNT kicked off its opening night studio show doubleheader in front of the Philly crowd on Wednesday. The pregame show, hosted by Liam McHugh alongside analysts Wayne Gretzky, Henrik Lundqvist, Anson Carter and Paul Bissonnette, featured analysis ahead of the game, live interviews, and special guest appearances.

“[Philly] is always a place where it’s intense, in my opinion,” Lundqvist said. “As an athlete, you want to play in places where you have that intensity and passion from the fans. I think the entire TNT crew, we’re excited to be on location again. We started doing that last year. It’s going to be a great game between Philly and Pittsburgh tonight.”

Last year, TNT broadcast from the Las Vegas Strip ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights home opener against the Los Angeles Kings. Emily Malmstrom, the senior vice president of communications for Comcast Spectacor, said getting NHL on TNT to Philly was months in the making, starting mid-July.

And as the Flyers made their proposal for TNT to make its way to Philly, they focused on one big thing: the fans.

“Our fans show up any day, any time, and we’ll be here through the night,” Malmstrom said. “And that was really important to TNT given the fact that they have the game following the Flyers and Penguins. They needed fans that were going to last until 2 a.m. And Philly fans show up and being in the heart of the Sports Complex at Stateside Live!, you have the Phillies, the Eagles, the Flyers, the Sixers. We knew we could get people to show up.”

    Charles Barkley’s hot take

And you know who else showed up? Charles Barkley.

The 11-time NBA All-Star, and former Sixer made a special appearance on NHL on TNT. And during his time on the show, the former NBA MVP delivered a hot take to start the 2026-27 NHL season.

“I’m pulling for my boy Rick Tocchet here with the Flyers,” Barkley said. “We’re going to win the Stanley Cup this year. The Philadelphia Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup. Yes, we are.”

One-woman band Honest2Betsy is bringing her ‘artsy-fartsy’ side to Eagles game day

Kira Coviello grabbed her accordion, strapped on her 18-pound backpack foot drum that was slightly leaning off the edge of the kitchen counter, slowly — and carefully — grabbed the straps hanging from the drum and placed them under the heel of her clogs. Then, the 42-year-old grabbed her kazoo and placed it around her neck.

“Look at me, an independent woman,” Coviello said as her husband, Noah Sullum, and her dog, Winnie, watched.

In a sparkly green Eagles jacket, a striped green dress, and a pair of green polka dot socks, the Doylestown native began to play the Eagles fight song with all of the instruments: her left foot controlling the tambourine, her right foot controlling the foot drum, her right hand controlling the snare drum with a baton twirling at the same time, and her left hand controlling the accordion.

This has become part of Coviello’s gameday tradition as she includes herself in one of her husband’s favorite pastimes: football Sundays.

“I’m a supporter of sports teams,” Coviello said. “I like all the hype around it. I really like the Eagles’ fight song. I like how happy it makes everyone around here. I don’t pretend to understand sports that well. I’m what you might call artsy-fartsy. My husband and I are very different people in every way. He likes the Eagles, and I have found a new way to involve myself with his enjoyment of watching the games. It seems like a new way to connect.”

Coviello, the one-woman band, has been posting consistently on her Instagram page, honest2betsy, for the last three years, growing her platform to about 440,000 followers.

When asked how she would describe her account to someone new, she responded: “nostalgic humor.”

“So, Betsy, the character I created, is kind of a repressed housewife who keeps discovering music, and, unfortunately for her, a lot of that music winds up being very raunchy, or it’s satire, and she doesn’t realize that it’s satire,” Coviello said. “It’s kind of like a silent movie with music. So I do a lot of acting with my face and creating little scenes. So that’s how the page started and blew up. And now it’s turned into a bunch of other silly, whimsical things that happen.”

Kira Coviello demonstrates her one-woman band for Eagles games.William Thomas Cain / For The Inquirer

She created the character in 2023 after leaving her job at a theatre school. What started as a few video clips getting sent into the group chat with her friends turned into an online persona.

“I actually thought I was going to use it to maybe sell some of the things I was crocheting,” Coviello said. “Like, I was crocheting at one point a giant uterus to support Planned Parenthood. So I thought maybe I’ll do this housewife thing, and I’ll sell some of my crochet products. I haven’t crocheted since I started doing these videos now because the ADHD took me in a different direction.”

Coviello has acted at the Walnut Street Theater. She also plays multiple instruments, including the violin, cello, accordion, a Swedish instrument called the nyckelharpa — and, most recently, the backpack foot drum — which she purchased from Farmer Foot Drum in August.

Meet the one-woman band performing the Eagles fight song on game days
Video: Meet the one-woman band performing the Eagles fight song on game days

With her musical and theater background, she has created a new series titled “Helping my husband watch the Eagles games.”

“[The foot drum] is a new toy,” Coviello said. “I just got it very recently and haven’t perfected playing yet, but I think that adds to the comedy of it.”

But Sullum and their three kids, Eloise, 15, Esme, 13, and Tallulah, 11, have gotten used to Coviello’s antics.

“She doesn’t do much to shock me anymore,” Sullum said. “I think I’ve seen it all. Our dog is used to the noise, used to the instruments, used to the singing. There’s got to be 15-20 instruments in the house at least it would seem. So, yeah. It’s noisy.”

Inside the house, there’s a room for all the instruments. Stringed instruments hang on the wall, including guitars and banjos, a piano sits toward the center of the room, and instruments like a washboard and a nyckelharpa stand out.

Kira Coviello started her online persona in 2009.William Thomas Cain / For The Inquirer

Coviello has been teaching herself how to play the foot drum through instructional videos. And as an Eagles fan, it was only fitting for her to learn how to play the Eagles fight song.

“I think that just comes with living in the Philadelphia area for over 20 years,” Coviello said. “It’s just in all of us. And I play instruments by ear, so that just comes out in my blood now.”

Since posting the “Helping my husband watch the Eagles games” series, both videos have accumulated over 14,000 likes, and Eagles receiver/return specialist Britain Covey commented, “I think we need you at the next team meeting [to be honest].”

“As long as they keep winning, I have to do that, because I’ve fallen into the trap of superstitions,” Coviello said. “So now if they win, it’s thanks to me playing my foot drums and helping my husband. And if they lose, perhaps then I’ll have to stop or take a break, or find a new way to help him watch the game. Just add another instrument.”

And with the Eagles suffering their first loss of the season to the Chicago Bears, Coviello is thinking of new ways to add more whimsy — perhaps tap dancing?

“I never know what I’m going to get,” Sullum said. “But, I think she has an upward trajectory for sure.”

When asked where she should perform next, he said “[Eagles] halftime show, where else?”

But in the meantime, Coviello will continue to play at her upcoming honest2betsy live shows at The Birdhouse in Lambertville (Dec. 11), Soul Joel’s in Pottstown (Dec. 18), and Cary’s Music Room in New Hope (Jan. 9).

Did the Eagles get ‘exposed’ in Monday’s loss to the Chicago Bears? Depends on who you ask.

The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of third-stringer Case Keenum and the Chicago Bears in the Windy City.

After a game that saw the Eagles struggle on both sides of the ball, most of the discourse surrounding the team has been centered around concerns over their safeties, the play calling, and ultimately who’s to blame.

Here’s everything they’re saying about the Birds following their Week 3 loss on the road:

    ‘They got beat up’

The Bears put together an 11-play, 66-yard opening drive to score to start the game. From that moment they continued to bully the Birds on prime time.

“This was a team loss; they got beat up,” said Jeff Saturday on ESPN’s First Take. “When you saw how the defense was playing and how they were responding, and to your point about Case Keenum, it was like he had the answers to all the test questions and had printed them out.

“Here’s the thing about the bad sign for the Eagles: they had four designed runs in the second half. Are we serious? Did y’all see the holes that Saquon Barkley had at the beginning of the game? You and I could have [run] through them and got five to six yards. It was unbelievable, and they went totally away from it.”

    ‘The Eagles got exposed’

Keenum, the Bears’ third-string quarterback, looked like a stud against the Eagles defense. The 38-year-old QB, who hadn’t started a game since Christmas Eve in 2023, was 24 of 34 for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

“The Eagles got exposed in what we already knew their weaknesses are,” said former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho on The Speakeasy podcast. “At safety, who the [expletive] is going to step up and play? [Andrew] Mukuba hasn’t been good enough. Then you try to throw in Michael Carter II, hasn’t been good enough. So, at safety, who the [expletive] is going to step up and play?

“This isn’t just a bad game, this is a bad sign because against the Tennessee Titans, we saw these issues as well. We saw bad tackling issues against the Commanders. … We saw the signs. It’s no longer just a bad game. These signs have existed week after week after week. Is it just one loss? Absolutely. But you better tidy things up quickly or one loss will become a domino effect into multiple losses.”

‘The offense is just too lethargic’

The Eagles offense didn’t do anything to offset their defensive performance. They turned the ball over three times, including a Tank Bigsby fumble and two interceptions. Not to mention, penalties plagued the team early, including an intentional grounding call on Hurts on the opening drive.

“The Eagles looked bad,” said Shannon Sharpe on the Nightcap Show. “Unless that defense reverts back, unless Saquon can start running through people again, and the offensive line starts blocking like they were then, I don’t see it again. Yeah, you can win some games. But, you’re not winning a championship again with this offense like this. This offense is just too lethargic. It does nothing. No creativity.

“They need to really unleash Hurts and let him throw the football. … I think [Hurts] is a good quarterback. I think the thing is in order for him to get better, he’s going to have to play off script and they’re going to have to expand the playbook. This offense is just too simplistic to really do anything. Either you trust him or you don’t.”

Hurts finished the night 16-of-25 for 153 yards. Barkley rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries.

    Who is to blame?

So, who is to blame for Monday’s loss?

To former NFL linebacker Manti Te’o, there’s a few people that can have the finger pointed at them.

“Who do we blame for the struggles, is it Sean Mannion or is it Jalen Hurts? And it’s a little bit of both,” said Te’o on Good Morning Football. “It’s going to take some time. Now, I don’t know how much time the Eagles have knowing the division that they’re in and knowing the conference in the NFC that they’re in.

“I hope that there is some trust between the coordinator, the head coach, the quarterback, and the rest of the offense because there is too much talent on that team for them to be the only team in the NFL that has yet to score in the first quarter of a game.”

Eagles open as home underdogs against the Rams; updated Super Bowl odds

The Eagles left the Windy City with a 27-7 loss to the Chicago Bears, who were led by third-string quarterback Case Keenum. Keenum’s 247 yards and three touchdowns — and several Eagles penalties and turnovers — helped send the Birds to their first loss of the season.

Now, the 2-1 Birds turn their attention toward their Week 4 opponents, the Los Angeles Rams, as they return home to Lincoln Financial Field.

From the Birds’ chances this weekend to updates on Super Bowl likelihood, here are some of the latest odds at two of the biggest sportsbooks:

The Eagles’ first loss of the season came after barely escaping Weeks 1 and 2 with wins over the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans.

The Rams (1-2) are coming off a 30-26 loss to the Denver Broncos after blowing a 16-0 halftime lead

The last time these teams met was in September 2025, when the Eagles defeated the Rams, 33-26, at Lincoln Financial Field. The game came down to the last second and Jordan Davis returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown.

As they prepare to compete Sunday after a short week, the Eagles are entering as underdogs.

After a comeback victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, the Eagles (2-0) travel to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears (1-1). As both teams prepare for a Week 3 matchup on Monday Night Football, here’s a look at updated game odds and some interesting prop bets from two of the biggest sportsbooks:

    Eagles vs. Bears updated odds

The last time these teams met was in a Black Friday matchup in November 2025, when the Bears defeated the Eagles, 24-15, at Lincoln Financial Field.

This time around, the Week 3 matchup was looking like the Birds’ toughest challenge to date — especially following the Bears’ 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1. However, that changed in Week 2 after the Bears struggled in a 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and saw quarterback Caleb Williams get carted off with a hamstring injury.

Williams is not expected to play against the Eagles, forcing the Bears to rely on Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum under center. Meanwhile, the Eagles have escaped their first two games with a win.

Entering the week, the FanDuel and DraftKings sportsbooks have the Eagles as 4.5-point favorites.

  • Eagles fans calling to ‘save Philadelphia tailgating’ after new guidelines proposed for sports complex

Eagles fans calling to ‘save Philadelphia tailgating’ after new guidelines proposed for sports complex

South Jersey native Carmen “Big Carm” Conti has been tailgating Eagles games for 10 years. And every year, the 38-year-old has set up in the exact same spot in F Lot. Just this past season opener, Conti’s tailgate welcomed about 75 to 100 people with a wing competition and a rotating DJ set — but that may have been the tailgate’s big send-off.

Last Monday, Conti took to social media to express concerns about the tradition’s future. In a post that read “Save Philadelphia Tailgating,” Conti explained the changes that could be coming to the South Philadelphia sports complex.

“Increased restrictions in the parking lots threaten the larger tailgates that have become part of the Eagles game-day experience,” Conti wrote on Facebook. “We are being told that tailgating should be limited to the space directly in front of or behind a vehicle. But larger, organized tailgates often require four to six parking spaces for tents, tables, grills, food preparation, entertainment, equipment, and most importantly, room for people to safely gather.

“And now there is another major concern: hand parking. Under this system, parking attendants would direct vehicles into specific spaces instead of allowing fans to park in the locations they have used for years. That might sound like a small change to someone who simply arrives, parks, and walks into the stadium. For established tailgates, it is anything but small.”

Conti first learned about the news when security guards approached him at his tailgate during Week 1 vs. the Washington Commanders.

“They try to do this like every three years,” Conti said. “They try to implement something where it cracks down on the tailgate. It’s a Philly tradition, you know, it’s something my family has been doing since before I was born. Tailgating brings people together. It doesn’t matter what team you’re on. … It’s our way of standing behind our team and bringing everybody together.”

The new rules would crack down on the bigger tailgates, adding new restrictions on oversized vehicles.

Sports Complex Parking Venture made an announcement on new guidelines, sent via email, that would be enforced “in an effort to provide a smoother, more convenient parking experience for guests.”

    Here’s what it said:

The designated parking for oversized vehicles will be in Lot D in the Xfinity Mobile Arena and the upper section of Lot N. Parking locations will be assigned and cannot be saved by guests. All equipment and vehicles must stay within the purchased space, and companion standard-sized cars and trucks will not be permitted to park in the areas designated for oversized vehicles.

“I don’t think it’s terribly surprising, although it does stink for the bigger tailgates that rely on being grouped together,” said Dylan Marck, a self-taught chef who has been serving high-end cuisines at tailgates since 2022. “But getting in and out has always been a mess, even with permits, so it’s not really surprising that they’re trying to change it up and maximize that space.”

Changes will be enforced for the next home game scheduled for Oct. 4 vs. the Los Angeles Rams — leaving some tailgaters worried about the communities that have been built in the parking lots of the South Philadelphia sports complex.

“I do think it could effectively end a lot of the bigger tailgates and little micro communities that developed,” Marck said. “Personally, not looking forward to potentially being whisked to a random spot and then having to figure it out from there, but we will adapt. We always do.”

    ‘Ready to fight’

On Wednesday, Conti and other tailgaters affected by the change held a news conference at South Philly Boxing Gym in South Philadelphia.

“Where are we at? A boxing gym,” said Louis Jordan, a member of Hungry Dawgs tailgate. “We’re ready to fight for what we believe in and what we love.”

Conti emphasized that the tailgaters wanted a “seat at the table” to discuss the upcoming changes. To do so, the tailgaters moved to organize.

“We are starting a committee so we can actually sit down on the board,” Conti said. “That’s going to be chosen right after here, after we get done. It’s going to be called the Philadelphia Tailgaters Association for Tailgate. We have to do something. We have to stand together.”

Affordability was a major topic of the news conference. Multiple tailgaters emphasized that tailgating offers a low-cost alternative for families who cannot afford to attend an Eagles game. One noted he regularly gets “heartfelt messages” of gratitude from mothers who take their children to tailgates to get a game day experience.

This September, a single ticket to an Eagles game cost an average of $523.

“Yeah, there’s a lot of kids that come to the tailgates and the parents bring them just because they know it’s safe,” Kellie Berrios, a tailgate DJ, said. ”They can walk around. There’s food everywhere. Everyone’s having good time. It makes you feel welcome.”

Multiple tailgaters present also pointed out that FIFA bent its rules to allow tailgates outside of Lincoln Financial Field for the World Cup this summer. At the time, a spokesperson for Philadelphia’s local organizing committee told The Inquirer that it was “committed to delivering a World Cup that is authentically Philadelphia.”

“We told FIFA we wouldn’t change our tailgate culture for them,” Jeremy Smith, a tailgate chef, said. “So why are you actually changing it for us? We don’t understand. We like have a seat at the table.”

Tyrese Maxey visits local spots to promote signature New Balance shoes: ‘Philadelphia has raised me’

Standing out front of Faheem’s Hand of Precision, located on South 20th Street, Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey recalled sitting on his front steps “like a bad kid.” During his second year in Philly, the two-time All-Star would walk across the street to get hot chips, watch a young kid from the neighborhood ride his dirt bike back and forth, and see kids on the bus passing by banging on their windows to get his attention.

Fast forward five years and Maxey was back on his old stomping grounds on Wednesday to promote the upcoming release of his signature New Balance sneaker, the Maxey v1s.

“I went and got a haircut and sat on those steps and talked to people that walked by,” Maxey said. “I came through here during the times of 5, 6 p.m. where the whole block, everybody is here. … This is a place of comfort. This is a place of family. It means a lot.”

Faheem Alexander, Maxey’s barber, has owned the shop for 26 years. Inside, the walls are decorated with photos of Alexander with celebrities like Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan.

However, there’s still no photo of Maxey and Alexander hanging up — yet.

“I have a spot cleared out for him,” Alexander said. “That’s my foundation pic. I want everybody to come in and see the picture. It’s been amazing to see him grow, from a fresh-faced 18-, 19-year-old kid, to now, he’s a father [at] 25 years old. … It’s just easy. He’s a beautiful person.”

Maxey getting his own signature shoe is another example of the young guard’s rising star power. He signed a shoe deal with New Balance in 2023, joining players like Kawhi Leonard, Jamal Murray, and Zach LaVine. Since then, he’s starred in the brand’s “We Got Now” ad, and released the Tyrese Maxey Hero Pack — which is a collection inspired by Maxey’s love of comic books that included a basketball shoe, the New Balance Hesi Low v2, and a lifestyle shoe, the New Balance 1906R.

“I’m just feeling blessed, and thankful for the opportunity,” Maxey said. “And then the biggest thing, I just hope the people are as positive and happy about it as I am. I hope when they put them on, they get to have fun with them. I hope the shoe brings them joy, as much as it brings me. That’s the biggest thing I wish and hope for. And I’m glad to see it come to fruition now.”

Video: Tyrese Maxey takes a tour of his old Philly stomping grounds to promote new signature shoe

Maxey debuted his New Balance signature shoes in April during the Sixers’ 109-97 play-in game victory over the Orlando Magic that clinched the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Ahead of the sneaker’s release, Maxey visited three local Philly spots as a way to surprise fans.

His first stop was at Foot Locker, located on Chestnut Street, where he met with the workers and posed for photos with fans who spotted him through the window.

“I basically grew up here,” Maxey said. “I’ve been through all these places, these streets, everywhere. And that’s just me trying to be a good person and a good role model to the kids and the people in the city — making them smile. Philadelphia has really raised me and it’s really helped me become the person I am today and I’m very thankful.”

The second stop was at the cheesesteak spot Ishkabibble’s, located on South Street, where Maxey took pictures with the staff.

“Ishkabibble’s is important to me because it’s the first place I had a cheesesteak,” Maxey said. “Cheesesteaks are huge here. And now whenever I’m close to Ishkabibble’s, I always go stop in. I’ve taken everybody there that I know, pretty much, that come to town.”

As Maxey was leaving the shop, Carlos Deloatch, 54, and his wife Valencia Whitfield, 69, stopped him to chat about the upcoming season.

“Don’t let LeBron [James] come to our city and steal your shine,” Deloatch said.

“He came here to help,” Maxey responded with a smile.

The Maxey v1s have been in the works since January. The low-top sneakers have a black base made of suede and mesh material, with light blueish gray accents that swoop into the design.

“The biggest thing was trying to keep it a secret,” Maxey said. “There’s been a lot of times where people have asked me on the spot in interviews in live situations like ‘Hey, you think New Balance will give you a shoe?’ and I know the shoe is coming, but I can’t say anything. … That was one of the most entertaining parts.”

The sneaker is set to release on Oct. 2.
